Year 8 students follow a mastery-based curriculum from White Rose Maths, involving diagrams and representations to allow for deeper understanding. This builds on the knowledge they have gained from KS2 and Year 7.
It is important that students practise their numeracy and mental arithmetic as well as recall key skills efficiently and effectively, students in set 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to do this through Numeracy Ninjas
Students have four 50-minute lessons per week.
Students will sit termly assessments, in addition to ongoing class assessments in the form of block tests. At the end of each topic on the scheme of work, students will sit a 20-minute block test in class, on the areas they have covered over the past couple of weeks.
They will be given feedback on their areas of strength from that block and identify topics they need to spend more time on. Their block test scores are recorded in the back of their maths book, to help students identify the areas to focus their revision on in preparation for their end of term assessment.
Students will also sit an end of year exam that covers all material covered in year 8
Students must have the following equipment with them in every lesson:
Students will get 2 pieces of home learning per week. In the maths department, we use 2 online platforms for student’s home learning, Mathswatch and Dr Frost Maths. Students will have their login information for these sites in their maths book.
All maths classes are set according to ability. This allows the teacher and department to set work which is appropriate for each student within a class. We want to stretch, support and challenge all of our students.
Students will have the opportunity to move sets throughout the year in order to match their progress and performance. In Year 8 there are seven maths sets, three in blue band and four in red band.
